This weekend reminded me why “work–life balance” isn’t just a buzzword.

This weekend reminded me why “work–life balance” isn’t just a buzzword.
On Friday I shared a blog about something that’s been on my mind a lot lately — being more present at home, finding better balance, and making sure I’m truly there for my children.
Then this weekend happened.
Our first ever A&E visit with my eldest.
One of those moments that instantly stops everything.
🛑 Your inbox doesn’t matter.
🛑 Your to-do list disappears.
✅ Your priorities become crystal clear.
Thankfully, everything is okay.
But sitting there, I kept thinking about the conversation we often have in workplaces about balance.
Because the reality is — balance isn’t about perfectly structured days or colour-coded calendars.
It’s about something much simpler and much harder:
👩👧👦 Being able to show up where you’re needed most, when it matters most.
For so many parents, carers, and professionals, the real question isn’t commitment. It’s whether the culture around us actually allows space for real life.
At Culture Minds, this is a conversation we believe organisations need to have more honestly.
Because culture isn’t just about engagement surveys or strategy decks.
It shows up in the moments when life happens unexpectedly:
• When a child needs you
• When family comes first
• When presence matters more than productivity metrics
So I’m curious to hear from this community… When life happens unexpectedly, does your workplace culture support you — or make it harder?
And for parents and carers here… what does “balance” actually look like in real life?
